Meta will take advantage of user data to improve its artificial intelligence.

Meta has announced that Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads will begin using images and data from their users to power Meta AI, their new artificial intelligence. This news has caused hundreds of users to recommend opposing the new privacy policy through a form.

Starting June 26, Meta platforms will begin collecting user data to improve Meta AI. The message, coming from the company led by Mark Zuckerberg, has been widely spread on social networks.

Meta has explained that the update to its data policy seeks to feed its artificial intelligence with user information, citing "legitimate interests" as the legal basis for doing so. The controversy arises because AI, like other generative models, needs large amounts of data to function, without distinguishing between protected or personal content.

The company has given users the option to object to this data use. According to the statement, users can disable this option by going to their account settings and completing a form in the privacy policy section. It is advisable to mention the data protection law or article 18 of the Spanish Constitution when specifying the reasons for the opposition.

Meta ensures that it will only use data from posts, photos and messages sent to the AI, excluding private messages between friends and family. However, it warns that the data could be used if it is shared with users who have not disabled this option.

The use of this data will allow us to improve Llama 3, Meta AI's new artificial intelligence model. This model, presented on April 18, will be used to improve search functions, real-time results and content filtering. Llama 3 will compete with similar applications from OpenAI, Microsoft and Google.

Meta has faced several sanctions for violating data protection rights, including a $5 billion fine over the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
